We (leaders) love to say we believe in servant leadership. It sounds noble, it looks good in a mission statement, and it makes for a great social media quote. But here’s the real question—do you actually lead like you believe it?
Servant leadership isn’t just a theory to admire. It’s a practice that should shape how we treat people, make decisions, and measure success.
If we say we believe it, then it should inform:
1️⃣ How we use power – Is power something to protect and hoard, or something to share so others can flourish?
2️⃣ How we communicate – Do we keep control through secrecy, or build trust through transparency?
3️⃣ How we measure success – Are we chasing short-term wins and applause, or investing in long-term growth and impact for our team?
4️⃣ How we show up daily – Do we serve with humility, or lead with ego?
Servant leadership is constructive, not destructive.
It’s not about being passive or “soft.” It’s about strength under control—using your leadership to lift others, not to keep them down.
The temptation will always be to slip into a “me-first” mindset (think 48 Laws of Power). But that kind of leadership eventually collapses under its own weight.
True servant leadership multiplies—trust, loyalty, results, and legacy.
So here’s the challenge I’m wrestling with, and I want to invite you into it: If we really believe in servant leadership, then how should that show up in the way we actually lead this week?
Because in the end, what we believe will always be revealed in what we do.
Wishing you a powerful week—not the kind of power that controls, but the kind that serves.
