In the Spring of 2012, my wife was pregnant with our second child, we were about to make a move to start a new church (with a whopping $2000 worth of funding) and we didn’t know how we’d make any money while we got our church plant off the ground. 😯

Naturally, I started investigating some remote job opportunities to help us in that season.

I had a college friend, Nic, that was managing a team of remote customer support people for a company called Wrike. It remains a competitor to Asana, ClickUp, and others to this day.

Nic was looking to add to his team and we chatted briefly. He gave me the skills test and application, after which I was invited to an in-person interview with the founder at a small coffee shop on Santana Row in San Jose, CA. 🤝

It was informal, conversational, and I liked that style. I’d never been in an interview that was so relaxed. It helped me be honest with him and myself, which I think is incredibly important.

Afterall, interviews are just two (or more) people talking about what’s best for all parties and you need an honest and relaxed environment for that.

When I conduct interviews to determine if someone is a good fit for Dream Support, I now try to bring out that same relaxed and open conversational environment.

After chatting with the founder, honestly and openly, about my goals and where I was headed in the coming months, he asked if I had any questions.

I had one question:

There are a lot of great tools out there for project and task management. Why will Wrike come out on top?” ⛰️

One of my top 5 strengths from the StrengthFinder test is Belief, so naturally I was looking for a compelling vision and something to latch onto. I need to believe in what I’m doing.

His answer was simple, “We’re Hungrier.”

But to me, that answer fell flat. Or as my daughter would say, “Womp, womp.

Now, to his credit, they’ve done very well, but for me, it wasn’t a compelling vision and I didn’t take the job.

Six years later, my wife and I started Dream Support, as a side gig. Just a way to make a little extra income to help with our growing family needs.

That little side gig eventually became my main job and I love it. ♥️

I get to Support the Dreams of busy high capacity leaders by providing personally matched, fractional and remote Executive Assistants.

And when I get texts like this, it fuels me! ⛽

I have three questions for you:

1. What fuels you?
2. Do you have a compelling vision for your business?
3. If you don’t have an assistant, are you ready for one?
